Europe has been lacking a high-quality and trustworthy source for rail emission data. We know, because we have been looking for one for many years. Now, we've built and compiled it ourselves.
Train operators do generally have emission data. However, they are measured in different ways and there is no one standard. This makes it hard to summarize and calculate on scale.
To create a trustworthy and normalized data set, we begun by creating a detailed distances calculation system where the data comes from the tracks themselves. This is possible due to our access to the best possible European timetable data.
Trains then get a CO₂ factor from the 27 countries based on the country’s electricity mix and how much of its intercity traffic runs on diesel or electrification.
Every input has a published source. Read the full method.
Booking a trip on All Aboard now always shows the CO₂ emissions for that exact departure, per passenger. In the checkout flow, we display the total for all travelers. With this, travel bookers now see the trips’ climate impact before they book.
Segment now always has the distance and emission fields, in search results, offers, bookings and orders. Get started, read the docs.
